Maxwell tornado continued against Chennai Super Kings.

The article speaks about another Maxwell tornado. He scored 90 runs and made the bowlers of Chennai Super Kings look like bowlers who play in the gali muhalla and suburbs in India.

There are certain types of storms which can be tackled after the weather office gives indications of the restoration measures to be taken. In case of tornadoes the speed and the devastating effect is so high that previous indications also cannot stop the damage.

Glenn Maxwell is one of that type of tornado. Right from Abu Dhabi to Dubai to Sharjah and now back in India, every team in IPL 2014 had done homework in respect of the aggressive Australian batsmen. But all the game plans and strategies had failed miserably.

In the match against Chennai Super kings on 7th May, 2014, the viewers of Barabati Stadium in Cuttack witnessed another tornado of Glenn Maxwell. Dhoni won the toss and elected to field. Sehwag opened well scoring 30 runs of 23 balls with 5 fours and a six.

But from the time Maxwell came in he produced a cyclonic innings.

He scored 90 runs in 38 balls with 6 fours and 8 sixes. This time the interesting fact was that all the ace spinners and seam bowlers of Chennai Super Kings got the hammering. Aswin, the best off-spinner of India gave 38 runs in 2 overs. Ravindra Jadeja gave 37 runs in 3 overs. I Pandey gave 41 runs in 4 overs. Mohit Sharma was better in the first spell but also gave 38 runs of 4 overs. Maxwell could not score a century as his huge hit was caught by Ravindra Jadeja at the boundary line. By that time the morale of Chennai Super Kings were destroyed. He was given able support by Miller and Bailey. Miller scored 47 runs of 32 with 5 fours and 2 sixes. Bailey scored 40 runs of 13 balls and remained unbeaten with 6 fours and 2 sixes. Kings Eleven Punjab scored 231 runs in 20 overs.

The target was so huge that Chennai Super Kings at no point in the match looked like chasing the total. All the batsmen in the team played well and at the end Chennai Super Kings lost the match by 44 runs. McCullum scored 33 runs, Suresh Raina scored 35 runs, Du Plessis scored 52 runs, but the asking rate was unmanageable. The match ended up being one-sided.

Maxwell’s performance till now had been the best in any IPL. Neither the innings of Gayle, nor Pollard, nor McCullum in the previous IPLs  could match the brilliance of Maxwell. He should reserve his shivalry for the semi-finals and knock out matches. If Kings Eleven Punjab ever wins an IPL tournament this is their best chance. Preity Zinta had been looking for the trophy for the last 6 years. She can keep her fingers crossed.
