It’s November 1, and this being a men’s magazine, I probably shouldn’t admit that the full force of my attention as a sports fan resides not with the NFL but the NBA and the Knicks. (I love pro hoops – even though no one shows up to play defense until the second round of the playoffs.) That said, I put my testosterone based fan-aticism and credibility in jeopardy by admitting to something far worse.

I’ve had at least two dreams recently on the loss of Jeremy Lin to the Houston Rockets. Yes Kandy, I have feelings. I am a writer after all, and I’m going to express the irrational turbulence that has actually caused enough pain to disrupt my subconscious mind. I just hope this helps.

Therapeutic recovery usually begins with an examination of the past and point guard pain is not unprecedented. After stretching the Bulls to seven games in the 1992 Eastern Conference Finals, a far more competent regime unloaded Mark Jackson for Charles Smith.

I was assured by those more knowledgeable that this was a great acquisition. No matter, I essentially stopped watching until the 1994 Finals.

That probably won’t happen here. On the other hand, as I’ve flipped on the preseason, a feeling of betrayal in the name of Carmelo Anthony causes a reflexive click of my remote.

But good counsel dictates sticking to what you can control and what you know. My answer to that is, do you know how many therapists are in therapy themselves?

Probably all of them so am I really digressing in pointing out that Jeremy Lin emerged off the recesses of Mike D'Antoni blurred peripheral vision to rescue the season and electrify the world. Simultaneously, Carmelo Anthony sat in the dark. Yes, you know what I’m saying.

And you’re right, this isn’t helping. Let’s stick with what we know. The Knicks are probably a better team with Raymond Felton than the far less than proven Lin.

Still, the two as a duo made a lot more sense to me than having the season rest on the health of a 38 year old Jason Kidd as backup. But year three of Lin’s $14 million salary cap killer might correlate to the exact time when the space will be needed to acquire that last piece of the championship puzzle.

What I know hurts too. Either way, Carmelo Anthony returned to crush Linsanity and got the coaching change of his choosing.

I can’t criticize him for that when Patrick Ewing did the same to both Hubie Brown and Don Nelson. Then again, the Knicks weren’t literally taking the world by storm as here. And we’re talking about Jim Dolan - salary cap, pleeeeease.

Did Anthony have a sit down with James Dolan – as his chosen darling – to enlighten the owner on the specifics of the only sanity that would be tolerated: his own.

Again, what we do know is that I am crazy. We also know that a little therapy could do wonders for James Dolan and Carmelo Anthony. Whether that would be enough to bring functionality and a championship is certainly in question. It might also count toward the cap. Either way, it’s going to be along time before I start feeling better.
